You might even wonder if it’s better to keep it a secret because the thought of telling anyone is too overwhelming. When you can barely manage your own feelings about this, how can you be expected to manage someone else’s, too? How can you handle questions you don’t have answers to yet? How can you deal with judgment when you’re already worried about your future? We’ll walk you through who to talk to first when you find out you’re pregnant in college, but a big takeaway is that there’s no perfect order, and you’re allowed to go at your own pace.

Before you tell anyone…
The first person you tell about your unplanned pregnancy doesn’t have to be the most important person in your life. The first person you tell can simply be the safest. You also don’t have to tell everyone at once. It’s okay to take small steps, and sometimes that means finding one person you trust to help you take the next small step. If finding the answers to all your questions and making decisions about your future feels too overwhelming, that’s what your support system is for. You don’t have to figure it all out before you tell anyone.

Who should you tell first?
If you’re trying to decide who to tell first about your unexpected pregnancy, you have a few options.

The first option is to tell whoever can be emotionally supportive and give you space to process your feelings out loud without being judgmental or getting overly upset. This might be a close friend, sibling, roommate, mentor, or trusted adult. Some signs that this person is a good choice could be that they’ve handled personal information well in the past, they listen more than they lecture, and they respect your autonomy. If you can feel safe being honest with them, and they’re likely to respond with care and discretion in the moment, maybe they’re a good person to tell first (even if they’re not related to you).

The second option is to tell a support professional. If you’re scared to tell someone you know, this can be a good first step because it’s confidential, informed, and pressure-free. They’re also likely to focus on resources, options, and practical next steps instead of their own emotions about what you’re going through. If this resonates with you, you might speak with a pregnancy resource center counselor or off-campus pregnancy support organization. The Avi Project has counselors available to support your mental health and help you identify your options. Call or text us any time at 720-386- 6009. It’s completely free and confidential.

The third option is to tell your partner. If you’re ready to tell them, they might be your best support. However, not everyone feels safe or ready to tell their partner first. You’re allowed to gather information, talk to people who will be more supportive, or take a few days to adjust to the shock of an unplanned pregnancy. That doesn’t mean you’re being dishonest or unfair. Especially if you’re afraid that they’ll pressure you to make a decision you disagree with, you might need to prepare for such a difficult conversation. Timing matters too. While there won’t ever be a “perfect time” to break the news, you might avoid telling them after a fight, in public, or at the end of an exhausting day.

A fourth option is to tell your parents. You might even feel obligated to go straight to your mom or dad, especially if you’re financially dependent on them or you feel like telling them first would be damage control. However, a lot of students worry about having to manage their parents’ emotions about their situation. You might be worried about disappointing them or making them angry. Fortunately, many parents respond with more support than expected; they might be worried about you, they might even feel guilty, but most of all, they love you and want to make sure you and your baby will be okay. Regardless, you don’t have to tell them until you feel ready, and you have freedom to plan what to say, how to say it, and when.

Who you don’t have to tell yet.
Remember, telling one safe person doesn’t mean you’re telling everyone. You might feel scared, confused, or unsure of what comes next. It’s also normal to feel a mix of different emotions. Fear and hope can coexist. You might even feel love and resentment toward your partner at the same time. If you’re in your twenties and navigating an unexpected pregnancy, you’re not alone. This article offers practical guidance, emotional reassurance, and information about the support available for pregnant students in their 20s.

Grieving the life you thought you’d have.
Many young women who experience an unexpected pregnancy grieve the version of their 20s they once imagined. It’s understandable - you might have had plans to take a gap year, travel, or add some internships to your resume. Maybe you wanted to start college, enjoy sorority life and other extra-curricular activities, celebrate your 21st birthday at a bar, graduate on a strict timeline, and dive into your dream career. When those plans suddenly shift, the sense of loss can feel heavy and confusing. If you’re navigating an unexpected pregnancy, it’s healthy to name those losses and let go of any shame you have around your disappointment or sadness. It’s normal to grieve. Give yourself permission to mourn and move forward, trusting that the future still holds meaning and possibility.

Reclaiming your vision for the future.
You don’t have to decide everything right now. You can still graduate. Your college experience may look different from what you originally planned, but staying enrolled is possible with the right support. Our team wants to help you navigate academic accommodations, leaves of absence, part-time enrollment, scholarships, and more. Needing a little extra help to complete your education doesn’t make you a failure, it just means that success looks different from what you once imagined.

Housing: Where am I supposed to live?
While Title IX protects pregnant students from discrimination, most dorms are not designed for young families. Some campuses have family housing available, but students may need to transition to off-campus options. Our team can help you explore all your options and find housing that suits your situation.

Finances: Money & Budgeting
Finances can feel especially scary during an unplanned pregnancy. After all, this is both a financial commitment and a surprise. If you aren’t already budgeting, learning budgeting basics and applying them during pregnancy and early parenting can help give you control and confidence over your financial situation. There are many realistic, small ways to build up your savings, as well as grants, scholarships, and other financial assistance that can help lighten the load (and our team would love to help you find them).

Health: Insurance & Medical Care
If you’re under 26 years old, you may still be eligible for medical coverage through your parents’ insurance. If you’re in your late 20s or don’t have access to medical insurance through your parents, there are other options for accessing affordable medical care. You may want to explore student insurance, medicaid, or insurance options through an employer. Throughout pregnancy, consistent prenatal care helps you and your baby stay healthy and safe and can prevent more costly medical issues later on.

Parenting: Anxiety & Not Feeling Ready
A lot of women in their 20s feel anxious about whether they’ll be a good parent. Maybe you feel unprepared or wish you had more life experience before taking on this responsibility. It may not feel good to worry about this, but if you’re worried, it means you care. And if you care, you’re already on your way to being an amazing parent.

Remember that you don’t have to be perfect. Care and consistency will take you farther than perfection paralysis. If you take parenting one day at a time, one decision at a time, your parenting skills and love for your little one will grow alongside them.

Support: Your Partner & Support System
Do you feel like you and your partner aren’t on the same page? Are you uncertain about their level of commitment and support? You were never meant to do this alone. Our team is here to help you navigate challenging conversations, set boundaries, and protect your emotional health. Having a good support system can go a long way when you don’t have everything figured out (and no one does). Your support system might include family, friends, counselors, or non-profit organizations like ours. Learning to ask for help can feel uncomfortable, but you don’t have to do it alone—we can help you take that first step.

You still have a future.
Unplanned pregnancy in your 20s doesn’t erase all your dreams. It will make life look different, but that doesn’t mean it will be worse. You can still have a life of meaning, joy, and success. You can still graduate college.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on the right next step instead of the entire staircase. If you’re on a mission to save your GPA, your first step is studying how to study. In addition, you can save a little money with free textbook loans from your library. Also ask about whether students get free access to apps like Adobe or citation tools with their student emails. There’s also extra pressure to choose a career that offers flexible hours, remote-work options, or limited travel.

If you’re feeling stressed about building a career, your campus may have free resources that can help. Services like résumé reviews, job-search coaching, internship placement support, and other career-readiness tools can save you valuable time and money you’d otherwise spend on outside services. The Avi Project also offers career counseling tailored specifically to the needs of new moms and pregnant students. If you’re looking for work-life balance, a clear path forward, and one less thing to worry about, text us today to get connected to a career counselor who understands. The Avi Project also offers tuition assistance, so if you need help chasing your professional dreams, we’ve got it covered.

Clothes, Food, & Housing for Pregnant Students
When dorms don’t allow children or lack family-friendly housing, pregnant students often worry about where they’ll live once the baby arrives. Concerns about food insecurity — especially with increased nutritional needs during pregnancy — can add even more stress. And let’s not forget that maternity clothes and newborn supplies come at an additional cost.

Campus food pantries that offer free groceries, pantry items, and hygiene products can offer some financial relief. Many now include baby essentials like diapers or wipes as well. Students can sometimes find free meals at student campus events. While thrift stores aren’t usually located on campus, there are often local exchanges where you can swap clothes for free or a “campus closet” that offers free clothes ranging from casual to professional. If this is you right now, you’re understandably facing a whirlwind of doubt, fear, and some very tough questions. Let’s talk about what you can do in a situation like this.

If You’re Hesitating To Get An Abortion
There are many different reasons why you might hesitate to get an abortion, regardless of whether you’re pro-choice or pro-life.

If you’re pro-choice, it’s easy to feel like you’re not accurately representing your beliefs if you choose not to get an abortion. But remember, pro-choice includes the choice to keep a pregnancy, even if it’s unplanned. Having an abortion you don’t want or aren’t sure about, isn’t pro-choice.

If you’re pro-life, you might already know whether you want an abortion or not, but still find it just as hard to make that decision when your partner doesn’t agree with it.

Understanding His Point Of View
Sit down with your partner and have a conversation where you’ll each sincerely attempt to understand each other.

Find out why he wants you to have an abortion. What are his reasons? They might include fear of responsibility, financial concerns, or simple unpreparedness - this was, after all, unplanned.

Explain why you’re hesitant to have an abortion, and why you might not agree with what he wants. You can understand someone’s perspective, but maintain a different viewpoint. You can understand their reasoning, their emotions, their background, their values, but still… have your own. You might say, “I see where you're coming from, and I understand why you'd feel that way. I just don't see it the same way." You can empathize with someone and still make a different choice.

Remember, understanding why he wants you to have an abortion doesn’t mean you owe it to him to get one. Empathy doesn’t equal obligation. If you feel like you owe it to him to have an abortion that you don’t want, consider whether it could stem from a deeper belief that kindness means compliance, from fear of being alone, from a long-standing pattern of putting others’ needs ahead of your own, or just from a strong desire to avoid disappointing him.

Somewhere in this conversation, you should discuss the different abortion options and what the procedures are like. As with any medical procedure, you should know what will happen before, during, and after the procedure, as well as any long and short-term risks. Your partner should understand what they’re asking you to do, and you need to be able to give informed consent if you’re considering having the procedure.

Talk about all your options - abortion, adoption, and parenting. It’s ok if some options are ruled out very quickly, but you should both have an understanding of why.

Be mindful of any signs that he may be pressuring you. It’s one thing for him to communicate his opinion, it’s another thing to try to coerce or manipulate you. If you recognize signs of coercion, it might not be productive or healthy to continue the conversation at that time.

What Pressure Looks Like
How can you tell whether someone’s just sharing their point of view, or trying to pressure you? It can seem like there are no good options, and any choice could destroy your future, ruin your relationships, or both. Students experiencing unexpected pregnancy frequently worry about how their choice will impact their college plans and career path. There is an enormous amount of pressure to make the right choice, but it can feel impossible to know what that is.

Evaluating all your options - keeping the baby, having an abortion, or going through with adoption - can be overwhelming. Today, we’re going to discuss abortion, and one of the most common questions about it - “Will I regret having an abortion?” It’s a reasonable question to ask before any life-changing procedure, including this one. The good news is that there are more and more studies on the long-term impact of abortion. The bad news is that they’re somewhat conflicting.

One study found that 84% of women mostly had positive feelings about their abortion several years afterward. Another study found that 53-63% of women experienced guilt, 41-66% experienced regret, 64-74% sadness, and 31-43% anger. Yet another study found that, five years post-abortion, more than 95% of respondents said that abortion was the right decision for them. But then another study reported that 60% of women who had abortions would have preferred not to. Some people have questioned whether these studies were designed correctly and whether there could have been biases at play, but regardless, the conflicting results can be confusing.

So, for women who do regret having an abortion - why do they regret it? What factors can increase your chances of experiencing regret? Some women have an abortion, want children, but then experience infertility later in life and are unable to have kids. Some women were pressured or coerced into having an abortion that they didn’t want, or felt obligated to have an abortion for their partner or their family. Some women discover that the medical procedure is not what they expected. They regret having an abortion because if they had known what the medical procedure was like, they wouldn’t have wanted it. Some women regret their abortion because they wonder who their child would have been, and what life would be like now with them in it. Some women wanted to keep their baby, but felt like external factors made caring for a child impossible. There are a range of other feelings that can accompany regret, including loss, guilt, shame, and even depression, creating a complicated emotional landscape.

While an unclear percentage of women regret their abortion, those who do regret it often report that it’s the thing they regret most in life and it’s continued to bother them for decades after the procedure. Abortion regret, when it does happen, is very personal and multi-faceted. Hopefully in the future, we will develop a better understanding of how abortion impacts women and their mental health in the long-term.

Abortion Regret FAQs

How long does abortion grief last?
This varies widely. Some women do not report experiencing grief after their abortions. Some women find that abortion grief lasts a few months, and fades with time. Some women don’t experience grief about their abortion until years after it happened. And other women regret their abortions almost immediately, and grieve for decades afterward.

What percentage of people regret having an abortion?
Studies report highly variable rates of abortion regret and mental health struggles following abortion.

Is it normal to regret an abortion?
Any life event where you experience loss or make a difficult and life-changing decision has the potential to trigger regret.

Is having an abortion traumatic?
There are several different ways to have an abortion, and some women find the procedures more traumatic than others.
